Cassy+Drew | Big Sur Anniversary | Big Sur Wedding Photographer

I met Cassy and Drew on the shores of Big Sur last month, while Mike and I were on our anniversary trip. This was a last-minute session, so they brought their adorable baby girl, and Mike ‘babysat’ while I did a quick couple’s shoot of them! They met through mutual friends at Happy Hour in Monterey back in 2012, and have been together ever since. We talked marriage, marine biology, and restaurants, and just in general hit it off right away. They just kicked off their very own blog, The Burrier Annex, full of central coast travel tips, family happenings, and more! Of course I asked them to write down their story, so here it is:

“We both instantly hit it off as we shared a common love of the ocean and sports, so our first few dates were full of non-stop storytelling about our favorite sports teams and our adventures as marine scientists. Our first official date (after the happy hour) was lunch while watching the NBA Playoffs. At the time, Lebron James played for the Miami Heat (Cassy’s hometown team) and Drew was trying his hardest not to hate her for it (he was a brokenhearted Cleveland Cavs fan). The Heat won that day, but Drew still fell in love. Six years later (married for two), we have an incredibly gorgeous and spectacularly spunky 10-month-old baby, and together with our two sassy pups, we’ve made a home together in the same sleepy town.

“Being in a relationship for six years (while living in a studio apartment no less!) has been no small feat and we are still learning from each other every day. It’s so easy to get swallowed up by the mundane routines of everyday life, and we constantly struggle to keep our romance fresh and nourish our sense of adventure and passion. That challenge has definitely intensified after having a baby! We’ve also found that watching this tiny human grow, and sharing in these extraordinary moments together, has become its own adventure. It has actually brought us closer together than ever before. Yes, we drive each other crazy at times—my blood boils when Drew changes the music in my car after criticizing my choice of playlist, his blood curdles when I mix the recyclables and the trash in one bag and leave it outside the door for days on end—but we also make each other better. We inspire each other to become the vision that we have of one another, and it’s made us better as individuals and as a whole (although he still turns off my music all the time and just the other day I mixed all the garbage!).

“We’re still learning from each other, stumbling through our relationship and fumbling through parenthood at times. But we take comfort in the knowledge that our life together will continue to evolve and that every step will bring us closer together with the gift of all the memories we’ve created, the moments we’ve shared, and those that are yet to come.”
